Senior Structural Engineer (Bridge Projects)
About This Role
A leading structural engineering consultancy is seeking a Senior Structural Engineer to drive the design and delivery of complex building and infrastructure projects across multiple market sectors. This role demands mastery of structural analysis, advanced materials behavior, and code-compliant design in a high-performance, client-facing environment.
You will be responsible for the full lifecycle of structural design — from conceptual system selection through construction administration — on projects including high-rise commercial buildings, bridges, industrial facilities, and seismic retrofit programs. Your work will directly influence the safety and resilience of structures serving thousands of people, making technical rigor and professional judgment equally essential.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead structural design of multi-story commercial, residential, and mixed-use buildings using steel, reinforced concrete, post-tensioned, and mass timber systems
- Conduct seismic analysis and design in accordance with ASCE 7, IBC, and AISC 341/358 for high seismic risk zones
- Develop complete construction document packages including structural drawings, specifications, and calculation sets
- Perform peer review and independent technical check of structural calculations prepared by junior engineers
- Manage structural subconsultant relationships and coordinate with architectural, MEP, and geotechnical teams
- Support clients through design review, building permit, and DSA/OSHPD approval processes
- Conduct site visits and provide construction administration support — reviewing RFIs, submittals, and change order requests
- Prepare proposals and participate in client presentations to support business development
Technical Requirements
- Licensure: PE license required; SE license strongly preferred or eligible to sit for SE exam
- Education: BS or MS in Structural or Civil Engineering
- Experience: 8+ years of structural engineering with demonstrated project leadership
- Software: ETABS, SAP2000, RAM Structural System, RISA-3D, Revit Structure, AutoCAD
- Codes: ASCE 7, IBC, ACI 318, AISC 360/341, AASHTO LRFD, CBC
- Deep understanding of seismic design principles, lateral force resisting systems (SMRF, SCBF, shear walls), and performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE)
- Experience with blast-resistant design, progressive collapse analysis, or forensic structural investigation is a plus
Preferred Qualifications
- SE (Structural Engineer) license in California or other high-seismic states
- Experience with dynamic analysis — response spectrum and time-history analysis
- Familiarity with BIM coordination workflows in Revit and Navisworks
- Prior experience in healthcare, education, or critical infrastructure (hospitals, schools, data centers)
- Published technical papers or conference presentations in structural engineering
Benefits & Culture
Work alongside a team of elite structural engineers on signature projects with lasting community impact.
- Compensation: $110,000–$155,000 based on experience and SE licensure
- Flexibility: Flexible hybrid schedule with autonomy to manage project responsibilities
- Health: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision — employer pays 90% of premiums
- Retirement: 401(k) with immediate vesting and 6% employer match
- Professional Development: Full SE exam prep support, paid conference attendance, annual training budget
- Bonus: Project performance bonus structure paid semi-annually
